The Carthusian monastery

The Carthusian monastery was founded in 1300’s by Pope Innocent VI. It is one of the biggest charterhouses in France and the architecture is particularly exceptional: a gothic church, three cloisters, forty cells and their gardens, and a chapel covered with frescoes by Matteo Giovannetti, the famous artist who also embellished the Palace of the Popes. La Chartreuse now hosts playwrights and companies, a place where they can dedicate their time to the research and the creative process of writing. It is also a venue for performances, especially during the Festival d’ Avignon.
