Nestling in the heart of Villeneuve, an authentic and peaceful village just 10 minutes from Avignon, the Chartreuse du Val de Bénédiction is an ancient monastery founded in the 14th century on the initiative of Pope Innocent VI. A jewel of Gothic architecture in the south of France, it was once one of the largest and most prosperous Carthusian monasteries in Europe. It is renowned for its sumptuous frescoes by the Italian painter Matteo Giovannetti. Today, it is a centre for artistic creation and research in the field of contemporary theatre.
Open to visitors all year round, La Chartreuse offers a rich cultural programme combining heritage and theatre throughout the seasons.
