At the Musée de la Romanité in Nîmes, a guided tour led by one of the museum’s guides explores the role art played in Roman civilisation, drawing on the collections of the Louvre.

An exhibition created in partnership with the Louvre

The tour takes visitors through the exhibition “L’art romain du Louvre. Un monde d’images”, put together with the help of the Louvre. It breaks with the purely aesthetic outlook inherited from the modern era and from collectors, and invites visitors to ask what art really meant in the Roman world.

An art rooted in everyday life and belief

According to the exhibition, Roman art was closely bound up with daily life as well as with belief. The works on display were not simply beautiful: they served functions, met practical needs and carried meaning.

All along the route, visitors encounter an exceptional selection of masterpieces from one of the world’s greatest collections of ancient art.
