Contact and information
Avignon Tourisme is running a guided tour on the history of Avignon’s Jewish community, starting from the square in front of the Palais des Papes and tracing the centuries of its presence in the city.
A presence in Provence since the 4th century
Settled in Provence as early as the 4th century AD, the Jewish community has played a key role in the history of Avignon. Its members first lived in the Balance district, then in the carrière (the Jewish quarter) close to Saint Pierre parish. The popes of Avignon offered them protection, but in return they had to abide by restrictive rules.
From the French Revolution to today: 600 families
Granted emancipation during the French Revolution, then hunted down during the Occupation, the Jews of Avignon now make up a community of 600 families, a mosaic of stories and origins that has left a lasting mark on the fate of the city.
A new tour on heritage and traditions
This new tour follows the community’s history down the centuries and introduces visitors to its heritage and its traditions. It lasts 2 hours, and group size is capped at 25 people.
Please note: because of the steps leading up to the synagogue, the tour is not suitable for visitors with reduced mobility.
