LUMA Arles is hosting a screening of the documentary “Le Blob, un génie sans cerveau” by Jacques Mitsch at the Parc des Ateliers, as part of a series of free-admission screenings.
A 52-minute documentary about a giant cell with no brain
Directed by Jacques Mitsch, this 2019 French documentary runs for 52 minutes and is shown in French. It follows a lighthearted scientific investigation into the blob (Physarum polycephalum), a living thing that is neither an animal, nor a plant, nor a fungus.
The blob is a giant, virtually immortal cell with no brain, and yet it can learn, find its way through mazes and pass on what it has learned. Such an organism forces us to rethink what we mean by intelligence.
An award-winning film selected at several festivals
- 2020: Silver Award at the AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards, In-Depth Video Reporting category
- 2020: Official Selection at FIPADOC, the International Documentary Festival in Biarritz
- 2019: Official Selection at Sunny Side of the Doc, in La Rochelle
A discussion and an After Lucides once the film ends
A discussion follows the screening, and an After Lucides comes next. These Afters give audiences the chance to keep talking with the speakers once the screenings and debates of Intervalles Lucides are over.
One weekend a month, from October 2026 to April 2027
This screening belongs to a series that LUMA Arles runs one weekend a month, from October 2026 to April 2027. Each session pairs a screening with a discussion, with free admission, and the programme also includes screenings designed especially for young audiences.
