LUMA Arles is showing Steven Soderbergh’s “Contagion” at the Parc des Ateliers in Arles, as part of a series of free screenings, each followed by a discussion.
A global pandemic seen from three perspectives
This 2011 American thriller (1h46) is shown in its original English version with French subtitles. It imagines a deadly, highly contagious virus that sweeps across the entire planet. The story moves between grieving families, CDC and WHO researchers racing to find a vaccine, and the panic that gradually takes hold of society. In doing so, the film lays bare the mechanics of a pandemic, in an educational and chilling way.
The film was well received by critics. For 20 Minutes, Steven Soderbergh delivers “a diabolical puzzle”. L’Obs sees a hellish logic imposed with storytelling and screenwriting virtuosity “that leaves you speechless”, while Le Figaroscope highlights how effectively the director builds his narrative, thanks to a consummate command of the thriller.
