This concert by the Orchestre de chambre de la Drôme brings the festival « Musique au château » back to the Adhémar gallery of Grignan castle. The festival had been on hold for several years while a new exhibition design devoted to the 17th century was created.

« Sévigné d’hier et d’aujourd’hui »: a trio playing the music of the marquise’s day

This trio programme presents the music of Madame de Sévigné’s era. The marquise took a keen interest in the musicians of her time and mentions them often in her letters. At court, music played a major part in social life, performed by noblemen and professionals alike. Madame de Sévigné describes, for instance, a concert at which Marin Marais performed, so she had seen him play in person.

Ballet, the air de cour and the tragédie lyrique feature prominently in her correspondence, and her daughter herself danced in the Ballet des Arts in 1663. The marquise also writes about Lully’s Atys, whose rehearsals and performances she had followed: the minuet and the gavotte from this opera are on the programme. Chamber music and stage music will thus echo one another through composers of her day: Lully, Marais, Gautier de Marseille, Hotteterre and others.

On the programme: from Jacquet de la Guerre to Béatrice de Die

  • Suonata III in D major, Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre
  • Sonata quarta in B minor, Mrs Philharmonica
  • Opening chaconne from l’Amour médecin, Lully
  • Minuet and gavotte from Atys, Lully
  • Passacaille in E minor, Marin Marais
  • Flute duets, Hotteterre
  • Airs de cour: one by Lambert and one movement of the minuet la Menetout
  • Ulrich Staeps
  • Delaying, Annette Ziegenmeyer (2002)
  • Improvisation on a chantar, Béatrice de Die

Three musicians: recorder, baroque harp and harpsichord

On stage, Marc Vervisch Domingo plays the recorder, Esther De Loynes the baroque harp and the recorder, and Matthieu Franchin the harpsichord.
