At LUMA Arles, in the Parc des Ateliers, the Cahiers d’Art archives go on show to mark the publication’s centenary, following on from the Archives Vivantes program.

A centenary celebrated with an international program

In 2026, Cahiers d’Art reaches its centenary with a program staged around the world: exhibitions in leading museums, an anniversary publication, talks and meetings. These projects acknowledge the lasting influence of the publication and carry forward its original aim, to provide a forum where art’s past, present and future speak to one another.

A century at the heart of modern art’s intellectual history

From the outset, Cahiers d’Art has held a decisive place in the history of ideas around modern and contemporary art. At key moments of aesthetic change, artists, writers and thinkers met in its pages, and helped shape how modern art was debated, interpreted and written into history.

Its archives do more than bear witness to the past: they form a living space in which to reread it and call it into question.

Archives Vivantes: rediscovering the margins of art at LUMA Arles

This approach echoes the Archives Vivantes program at LUMA Arles, which sees archives as active mechanisms rather than frozen stores: they steer what is remembered, interpreted and passed on.

On show at LUMA Arles, the Cahiers d’Art archives reveal the episodes that made modern and contemporary art understandable, and bring to light artists, ideas and territories that stayed on the margins. Going through them again means questioning the foundations of how art is perceived, interpreted and valued.

Once reactivated, these archives offer a fresh discovery: forgotten images, experimental gestures and overlooked contributions unsettle established narratives and open up new perspectives for artistic knowledge.
