This guided tour in English of the Palais des Papes in Avignon brings everyday life within its walls in the 14th century back to life.

The Pope’s household and its catering services

Your guide goes beyond the “big story” to explain how the “Pope’s household” was run, with a particular focus on the catering services. You learn which dishes the papal table favoured, where the ingredients came from and how people guarded against attempts to poison the Pope.

A stag, a lion and a monkey: the riddles of the Palace’s decor

Why did the Pope study beneath the anxious gaze of a stag painted on the walls of his study? Why does the lion hold a special place in the sculpted decoration of the Palace? And what does the monkey admiring itself in a mirror mean, as you leave the Grande Chapelle? You could hardly work it out alone: the guide knows the answer and reveals it along the way.

The tour lasts 1h30 to 1h45. Meet at the foot of the wooden staircase, to the right of the main entrance of the Palais des Papes, and arrive ten minutes before departure. It suits adults as well as children aged 11 and over.
