In Orgnac-l’Aven, close to the Gorges de l’Ardèche, the visit to the Aven d’Orgnac cave and the Cité de la Préhistoire offer two discoveries in one: an underground world of striking scale and a museum devoted to the region’s earliest inhabitants.
A cave discovered 90 years ago, the only underground Grand Site de France
The Aven d’Orgnac Grand Site de France brings together nature and culture: the cave, revealed 90 years ago, and the museum. It is the only cave to hold the Grand Site de France label, remarkable for its colossal chambers, its countless crystal formations and a demanding approach to sustainable development.
Here, the Earth tells its story over more than 100 million years, from the formation of the limestone through erosion and geological change, down to the way humans have used the cave since Prehistory.
Three huge chambers beneath ceilings 55 metres high
The underground route leads through three vast chambers whose vaults reach a height of 55 m. Along the way you pass giant palm-shaped stalagmites, ochre-coloured draperies, columns, organ-pipe formations and all kinds of crystal concretions, in a silent world shaped by darkness.
The temperature stays constant at 12 °C, in summer and winter alike. Together with the silence and subtle play of light, this makes for a sensory experience in which time seems to stand still.
The Cité de la Préhistoire, 350,000 years of human occupation
Above ground, the Cité de la Préhistoire, which holds the “Musée de France” label, traces 350,000 years of human presence in the region. Striking objects, interactive displays and lively workshops (fire-making, hunting, flint-knapping) stimulate both the eye and the imagination.
Local archaeological finds, notably those from the Orgnac III site, enrich a story in which rock and human memory meet.
A sustainable development approach under way since 2004
Since 2004, the site has followed an exemplary approach to conservation and sustainable management. Showcasing the place, passing on knowledge and respecting living nature go hand in hand.
Between raw beauty and human memory, the Aven d’Orgnac invites visitors to see the Earth as a living heritage to be understood, protected and admired.
