During the autumn school holidays, from 17 October to 1 November 2026, the Château de Grignan offers a daily guided tour at 3 pm. It tells the story of Nicolas Fouquet’s trial as seen by his friend Madame de Sévigné.

A superintendent’s downfall, followed by a friend

The tour is part of the trail devoted to L’Affaire Nicolas Fouquet. The superintendent is arrested “at the very height of his power”, having failed to notice any warning sign of his fall. Madame de Sévigné, who regards him as a friend, follows the trial and then the sentence with keen interest and deep emotion.

Compromising letters and a reputation saved, in the Grand Siècle of Louis XIV

Some of her letters, found in Fouquet’s possession, put her in a difficult position for a while. She nevertheless manages to protect her reputation, and from then on she takes greater care over what she writes to her correspondents. Alongside the château’s guides, visitors retrace this story of friendship set in the heart of the Grand Siècle, just as Louis XIV takes the kingdom firmly back in hand.

The tour lasts 1 hour, is given in French and is limited to 25 people. The ticket also lets you explore the château freely and follow the “L’Affaire Fouquet” trail.
